The distinction between resilience and stamina is important; as revealed in a recent course I taught. During my training many people there thought they were resilient, only to recognize that they were actually leaning into stamina. While stamina and resilience are similar, I emphasized an important distinction. Resilience honors the pain while creating rhythms for recovery. Being resilience is demonstrated by creating intentional opportunities to rest and recharge.
Stamina, often portrayed as head-down perseverance, poses the risk of burnout. While it is a strength and at times required to achieve certain results, it invites us to muscle through. Stamina says, ‘ignore the pain’ and keep going. Resilience knows pain is coming and engages in intentional reflection and honors challenges, and establishing rhythms that fuel personal and professional growth.
